America may not be on the top ten most polluted countries in the world, but just out of ten most polluted cities in the United States California alone has the top five, as stated by the American Lung Association May 4, 2008. That is not to say that America is a better country and is doing a better job in trying to preserve our land, or that America does not consume more than any other country. According to the Department of Energy, the United States is currently using 20 million barrels of oil a day. That is more than 3 times of the amount that China uses, coming in second among the largest consumers of oil in the world. European nations are somewhat guilty as well, but they use smaller cars, recycle more and use more alternative fuel sources. They have also signed the Kyoto Protocol, which America has yet to agree upon and sign. As Americans we need to question our selves in the everyday choices we make; is this better for my world? By driving my SUV all by myself and not giving a ride to other people, am I helping my planet? Do I need to drive today? Why not ride a bus or walk? These are all very easy questions and can fit your lifestyle in anyway. Not always do you need to walk, or ride a bike but sometimes take theses things into consederation and see if they work in your day to day life. Not only will you help out the environment but you can stay that much healthier as well.

By driving a newer more fuel eficiant vehicle you can save money and help the environment rather than getting a used vehicle from your neighbor. The average economic car starts around $15,000. Yes you might be able to get that car from your neighbor for a lesser amount, but by the time you put the money into fixing it up and getting back on the road you have now spent almost just as much as buying a newer car. Except now you have a used vehical with an older emissions rateing and is more prone to giving you even more problems further on down the road. When you take a look at these hybrid cars that are coming out now you will find that the emissions are lower and they run on gas and electric

“Into the Wild”

This is a great book. I really speaks to me in a way that makes sense. It is about a young man who comes from a well off and very well respected family, in search for the truth. He burns his life savings in order to make sure he leaves everything behind while he travels into the wild in search of himself. He finds he way by hitchhiking, walking and kyaking throughout throughout the United States and Mexico. All while meeting new people all from different walks of life, all with different voices and opinions who give him just the right knowledge he needs to make his life and the way it all exists make sense. All while in the meantime trying to get to Alaska where he can live his life with no boundaries and nothing holding him back.

Spring Break 08

During my spring break I went to Arizona to see Flogging Molly for St. Paddy’s day. I had a total blast. I finally figured out a way to travel cheep or on other peoples dollar. There is this great website called Couchsurfing.com. This website allowed me to talk to other people my age that are where I want to be, physically that is. So I met these people who lived in Az, they allowed me and my roommate to stay at there house for a few days and show us around Tempe AZ. They were all very nice people and showed the both of us a very good-time.

We went to see to ASU campus, which is really amazing. It is so big and really has a lot of very new and modern architecture. We climbed “A” mountain and walked the downtown area then went on to see our concert. It only cost me $300 for my roommate and I to have an awesome time. Everywhere we went it was almost like everyone wanted to show us a good-time at there expense, it was amazing. I learned a lot about economic differences and what it is really like to keep your own money in with your local community, while have a fun and exciting time.

The popular use of a borderline expletive effects not just myself but many people

in there everyday lives. In the story “kinda Cussin’” by Marlon Manuel, he compares the

difference between words like freakin, the awful F-word and other words as such of that

nature. Are people in today’s society using slang words in place of words with a higher

meaning more often? People today are becoming more and more at ease in the way we

say things everyday.

For example, in the year 1953, when writers wrote for the show “I love Lucy”,

they were not allowed to say the word “pregnancy” they had to say she was “expecting”,

as said in “Kinda Cussin’”. Now today this would not even be a problem. Yes some

shows might use “expecting”, but there is no problem with using the word “pregnancy”.

The way you speak also has to do with what kind of environment you happen to be

mostly surrounded by in you everyday life. I work in the construction field. When I go to

work in the morning it is not uncommon for me to hear the F-word at all and through out

the day. People use this word everyday as though it is not a problem. In there minds they

are thinking that we are working with adults, and who cares what other adults say. It is

not as though they are speaking to child, but an adult. An adult can make better decisions

between right and wrong not like a child. A child will say a swear word if he or she hears

it from some kind of adult, because if an adult said it, it must be right for them to say it

too.

It’s not just the children of today’s society that use theses words all the time. Even

adults will use theses words when speaking to other adults. They will use them in

meanings that will be ok and acceptable to whomever they are speaking too. This is just

the way the English language is being accepted today. Now if I was to go to work and

start saying words like freakin, shoot, darn etc. I would be laughed at and called names

all day. This is something that just is what is and it will continue to become greater

everyday. But someone like my Mother who is a realtor will use words such as shoot, and

darn because this is a nice way of showing her frustration while being in the public eye.

In conclusion, speaking in words that are slang for swear words should not be

acceptable. Just because we are not saying what we really mean to say does not mean that

we should go about it in another way. You should always be thinking before you speak

and always ask yourself, are you ready to deal with the actions that are about to come

from what you are about to say.

2. There is no true solution because we must expand but we should do it gradually over time.

3. Traffic in Los Angles it a very good example of over development in todays society. Personal Experience: sitting in traffic getting mad while driving through LA.

4. Make sure to enclude a biblography at the end. But while finding recorces make sure I quote them and they support my opinions.

5. I want to conving people of my generation to get aware because we are the future and the sooner we know the sooner we could find a solution together as a whole.

Picture the car you hope to own in three years. Think of that place where you wish you could spend vacation. What’s the name of that movie you can’t wait to see? While these choices stem largely from your natural personality and tendencies, it’s a safe bet that some sort of persuasion and likely the media has played a role. Car ads. Travel brochures. Movie clips. Recommendations from friends. These powerful forms of persuasion penetrate your mind and your wallet. But why don’t those Swiffer Wet Jet commercials inspire you to beg your housemates to buy them so you can clean the toilet? Why aren’t (most of!) your teachers excited to see what’s new at the Skate Shop?

Target audience. In order to be persuasive, you must gear your argument toward the anticipated audience. It’s exactly how advertisers rope you in. Ads that persuade you to purchase products use different language, emphasis and style than those that aim to persuade your grandparents. The average yearly salary of a market analyst – a person hired by advertising companies to study what sells to certain groups of people – is about $60,000.

To further your awareness of targeting audiences, you (along with your peer group) created an ad campaign for an environmental problem. Your next assignment asks you to write a 3 page double spaced typed persuasive essay (or other form of persuasive writing) to convince your target argument to do something about a specific environmental problem. I encourage you to write to the audience you know best, but here are some other specific target audiences:

Amy Tan, “Mother Tongue”

In this story it talks about the difference between languages. A young woman’s mother happens to be from an Asian descent and spoke in “Broken English”. Or is this a higher way of talking to someone? It’s not as thought her way of speaking is lazy, but maybe speaks in fables. Meaning she is almost telling a story every time she speaks. I feel as though there is nothing wrong with the way she speaks but maybe it is the way we speak as Americans. Should we consider ourselves to actually be less intelligent? If we were to take out words such as: and, the, it, is, etc. Would our languages be as one? If were to find some common ground of which everyone could understand, maybe then we could begin to understand different types of culture. Then maybe different opinions and views would be better understood.

What has persuaded me

Honestly I can’t really recall something that has persuaded me onto doing something that has drastically changed my life in one way shape or form. But there are many examples of things that have leaned me one way or another.

For example, One day I was really thirsty and wanted something to drink. So there I was just relaxing watching TV and there it is an ice cold Coke-a-Cola. So I said to myself, wow! That’s just what I want. So I sat there just a few seconds longer and was about to get up and get a Coke right out of the fridge, but wait what’s I see, but a beer commercial, “Tap the Rockies”. No wait that’s what I want. There was hot women dancing around, people everywhere having a good time. Yeah, so what did I do but walk right down the corner store and picked up a “Rack” of Coors Light and began to party. But really all this time all I had to do was reach in the fridge and grab a Coke but something else caught my eye and I was off.
